How to Lighten up a Dark Home

For those who thrive in natural light, a dark home can have a significant impact on mood. However, there are ways to brighten up the space without major renovations. Here are some helpful tips:

Windows are your best way to let in natural light so make sure your window treatments aren’t impeding the light coming in. For instance, if you have plantation shutters or mini blinds - take them off. You’ll be amazed by home much additional light comes in the room without those.

If you have curtains, make sure they are mounted so that the material just frames the window and doesn’t cover any of the actual window. Same with shades. If you have a small window with shades, considered doing an outside mount (above the window) instead of an inside mount that could take up 6-8" of light.

Light was added to the kitchen below by removing the upper cabinets by the sink and adding windows as well as adding a lighter countertop and some robin’s egg blue and white paint.

Next, use light colors in your home. White is the reflection of all colors so any lighter color item is going to make the room feel brighter. And don’t be scared to add pops of cheery colors like orange and yellow that mimic the sun. Earthy tones and dark colors can create a cool, moody vibe but if you are hoping to lighten up a room, steer clear of those and opt for lighter colors.

The curtains in this room do not block the natural light, the walls are painted a light color and the furniture is also light in color to create a light and bright living room.

If you feel like your cabinetry and flooring are the culprits to your dark room, consider painting the cabinets and putting in a light color throw rug on the floor. Even if your cabinets are stain grade, you can paint them. A wood like oak may need more prep work so that you don’t see the graining, but a maple or alder wood paints beautifully. Painting your cabinets a lighter color will reflect light and make the room brighter.

The light green cabinets and lighter rug assist in making this kitchen feel more open and bright.

As far as the flooring goes, adding a lighter color area rug will also achieve this goal. If you are worried about stains, consider one of the many washable options out there or go for a really nice wool rug which is naturally resistant to stains and lasts a lifetime.

My final tip is to declutter your space. A room filled with too many items can feel cramped and darker. Keep your décor minimal and choose pieces that add to the light, airy feel you’re aiming for.

Hope these tips give you that lighter, brighter home you are craving!
